Get In Touch with Your Breasts

It’s no secret in our society of women.  Breast self-exams save lives.
When I found the tiny lump on my left breast that led me straight to the radiologist the next day for a negative mammogram and an ultrasound. The radiologist suggested we “watch it for a year” because my age and family history (none) meant it was “probably nothing” but calcifications.
He was wrong.
My confidence in my own body took me straight to a surgeon for a biopsy the following week that led to the shocking Stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis which required aggressive chemotherapy and a bi-lateral mastectomy. The cancer was also in my lymph nodes and in my right breast. A far cry from calcifications.
The four months of chemotherapy were grueling, for me and for my three children, who were 10, 12 and 13 during my “wellness challenge.” I also suffered a stroke during my fourth chemotherapy treatment and had emergency heart surgery to repair the hole that was discovered in my left atrium – totally unrelated to my breast cancer. (Yes, yes, I know, it IS hard to believe, but oh, so true.)  The whole process, from the day I found the lump on my breast, to the day I had my newly reconstructed breasts and nipples tattooed, took about 15 months. I consider myself cancer-free since the day I had my bi-lateral mastectomy on October 13, 2004, and while that’s a day most women would like to forget, I choose to celebrate what is most important about that day – saying “bye-bye” to cancer in my breasts and in my life.
So, what’s my point? No one knows your body better than YOU. You are, after all, an expert on you. It’s time to “Get In Touch” with your body – especially your breasts. They change throughout our lives which is why it’s important to know what your normal, healthy breast tissue feels like all the time…before your period, during your period, after your period, when you put on five pounds, when you take off five pounds, when you drink a pot of coffee, when you eat a hot fudge sundae. If you’re cystic, you especially know that all of those things can affect your breasts and the only way to know your cycle and what’s normal for you is to “Get In Touch.”
If you know what your normal healthy breast tissue feels like, you have a better chance of recognizing anything that isn’t normal or healthy. It’s what saved my life – knowing that what I felt wasn’t normal for me. We say BSE like BYT – that is, Breast Self-Exam like Brushing Your Teeth.
Make it a habit, ladies – and don’t just do it once a month – do it for life!
